Australian Iced Coffee (with Maple!)

Australian Iced Coffee // The Sugar Hit

Good afternoon! Did you have a bang up weekend? I hope you did. You only get a certain number of those in this life, you know, so do try and get the most out of them!

That was weird. Now let’s talk food! Today I’d like to perform a little public service announcement. And here it is – ‘If you order an Iced Coffee in Australia, this is what you will get’.

To be clear, it won’t be exactly this. But it will contain ice cream, and probably be topped with whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa or chocolate. I’m led to believe (through personal experience) that this is not the case in lands over the sea!

If you’re in the mood to leave a comment, I’d love to hear what an iced coffee is like where you come from. Here it’s a very milky coffee, topped with ice cream, ice (which I left out), and ALL the toppings.

For this very indulgent, too legit to quit version, I decided to sweeten my coffee (as if it needed it with all that ice cream – ha!) with a little smoky maple syrup. Can we pause for a minute to appreciate what an awesome combo coffee and maple syrup is? It’s the bomb.

So anyway, I made this a full-dairy version, but I can’t help but whisper to you that this might be amazing with almond milk, sans ice cream, or even with a coconut-almond milk combo and a scoop of coconut ice cream? You know that’s gonna be tasty.

This delicious monstrosity of a drink reminds me of going to the beach. Long days, where you’ve got literally nothing to do but mooch around, and take up space at a cafe for hours on end, watching people windsurfing and brushing endless layers of sand from your shoulders.

It’s the perfect thing to hunch over, with a straw and a spoon as you discuss such important issues as ‘what’s the best kind of pizza’, and ‘what we should we maybe make for dinner later…’, and ‘we’re definitely ordering pizza’.

Man oh man, now I really want to go on a beach holiday! I might go and daydream on Air BnB for a while, looking at some of the world’s more beautiful beach locations (California coast, I’m looking at you).

Until then, I think it’s indulgent caffeinated drinks and late night computer binges for me! And in all honesty, I’m not mad at it. Talk to you Wednesday! Peace!

xx Sarah.

  • Sarah, I never disagree with anything you do. Ever. Hello, feta fries.

Iced coffee for me though is just a shot of espresso, milk and ice. But now you go me, thinking about adding maple syrup. YUM.

    • Haha, #fetafriesforlyfe! And dude, I totally forgive you! Maybe it’s a brisbane thing, but if you want an espresso/milk/ice concoction, you gotta ask for an Iced Latte. If you ask for an Iced Coffee, you’re getting the works!

  • This looks absolutely devine! Having lived in LA growing up I still make the iced coffee mistake when ordering (in LA it was black with ice, really… add cream). But really, who’s going to complain when something like that comes to your table? Yum!

  • I am a huge fan of this version of iced coffee (I’m also from Australia) but tbh I still think of the Breaka version, when I hear “iced coffee”, haha.

Also, I’ve only ever had maple syrup in my warm coffee but I can only drool at the thought of how good it’d be in one of these! Totally trying it out soon!

  • It is freaking Freezing here, and i want a big ol’ frosty mug of this maple lovin’ goodness anyway! here, iced coffee can be dark with ice only or something more like a shake. i go for the in between. (and what is the best kind of pizza???)

    • Best kind of pizza – impossible to choose! Which is why it’s such a great lazy-day question. Right now, I’m leaning towards a totally traditional Neapolitan option, but I’m so easily convinced otherwise. I love to discuss pizza.

  • Well this looks PERFECT! I am now only considering this iced coffee. I live in San Diego CA, and iced coffee is black coffee over ice. that’s it – some folks add milk or cream. I am loving your desire to come to our neck of the woods, because I would die to visit Australia! Lets switch!

  • this is amazing. For me, iced coffee is usually what you might think of as “cold brew”. Basically, stromg and cold black coffee over ice which you can add cream, or whatever milk, and sweetener of choice to. I can’t be mad at an ice cream version, though!

  • I live in Boston and just had to comment on this! Iced coffee here is literally coffee with ice in it. they usually make a really, really strong coffee that won’t be diluted by ice, so it’s not watery at all.

they also do a lot of “cold brew” here which is basically really concentrated coffee over ice. i’m obsessed with it.

      • Normally in the US a float is a some sort of soda (or beer) with ice cream But I’d call this a float too. Iced coffee in Michigan is just coffee over ice. I literally lived in a maple Forest and have never put maple syrup in my coffee, going to try it.

  • So ironic, I went to a cafe in Hawaii this morning and ‘Australian iced coffee’ was on the menu. I wondered if it was in fact the ice cream in the coffee and now regretting not ordering it.

  • I’m totally having my mind blown here…does everyone know about maple in coffee but me? I’ve never heard of it, tried it, seen it, thought of it…I can’t even really imagine what it tastes like. I OBVIOUSLY will be trying it tomorrow. However, in Boston it is negative degrees today so I’m going to wait a few to try the iced version. Thanks for the *BOOM* in my brain this morning…

  • This looks so good, Sarah! I live in Chile and from what I’ve heard the iced coffee here is much the same as this, although I’ve never oredered one here. However, I grew up in Tennessee and like many of the commenters have said iced coffee in the States is just coffee with ice. I think there is a obvious miscommmunication going on here and I clearly know which side I’m on! I could probably drink 5 of these! Pinned!

  • Oh, girl! If only I would have known about this while I was there!

Another American (from Minnesota) chiming in here with Iced Coffee = Coffee over Ice. Then you get to add whatever you like. I love strong black coffee, but can’t get into the iced stuff. I must not have found the right combo of cream & flavorings.

But an Australian Iced Coffee would be a whole different story!

But how is it that living in Maple Syrup country that I have never heard about adding it to coffee? Must. Try. Now.

  • I live in Denver, CO. Iced coffee is coffee+ice, totally not exciting. I want coffee with ice-cream, I don’t even care that there is snow on the ground right now.

  • I’m from Australia too, and your spectacular iced coffee reminds of the ones we used to get from the milk bar on the way home from school when I was a kid (sans the maple syrup). Always sweet, always milky, always with a dollop of cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Best kind… and totally ruined our appetites for dinner.

  • My iced coffee never looks this freggin’ delicious. Then again, I’m the loser ordering a skinny vanilla latte… needless to say, it doesn’t come loaded to the gills like this beauty you have here! Totally making this. First thing tomorrow morning #yay! Thanks for sharing ?

  • It makes perfect sense to add maple to it! Maple makes everything better. I too live in Australia and that is exactly what i think iced coffee is. It takes me back to my 2 month road trip around Australia where the only descent coffee was an iced one full of milk and sugar… aaah farmers union. They should do a maple version!

  • I’m so jealous now, in California if you order an ice coffee that’s exactly what you will get, ice and coffee in a cup. I add sweetener and milk, but I never thought to add maple syrup!!!! trying it today!
